GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 23, 2016 – With high school football season around the corner, fans will get to cheer on their favorite school on a larger stage as 12 Michigan high schools compete in the second annual GRidiron Classic, presented by Lake Michigan Credit Union, Aug. 26 and 27 at Davenport University’s Meyering Field and Grand Valley State University’s Lubbers Stadium.

Produced by the West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC) in partnership with Davenport University, Grand Valley State University and the OK Conference, the GRidiron Classic has doubled in size from 2015, featuring more schools from a wider region, including Saginaw Swan Valley, Fenton and Muskegon Orchard View. Also new is the chance to play at Davenport’s one-year-old football stadium in the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.

This is a fantastic opportunity for high school football players to compete on a bigger stage at first-class collegiate stadiums in front of friends and family,” said Mike Guswiler, president of the WMSC. “For fans, it’s an exciting event to show school pride and watch their team play in a week one kick-off to the season in this type of environment. Plus, you’ll see great talent. We’ve got students who have already committed to conferences like the Big 10.”

Following is the GRidiron Classic schedule:

Friday, Aug. 26: Meyering Field - Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex (Davenport University)
Game 1: 4:00 p.m. – Hopkins vs. Newaygo
Game 2: 7:30 p.m. – Zeeland East vs. Saginaw Swan Valley

Saturday, Aug. 27: Lubbers Stadium - Grand Valley State University (Allendale)
Game 1: 10:30 a.m. – Muskegon Orchard View vs. Montague
Game 2: 1:30 p.m.   – Allendale vs. Hudsonville Unity Christian
Game 3: 4:30 p.m.   – Coopersville vs. Fruitport
Game 4: 7:30 p.m.   – Caledonia vs. Fenton

“High school athletics are key to our mission of promoting sports in West Michigan, and we want to make the first week of high school football a special occasion,” added Guswiler. “What better way to do that than partner with top higher education facilities in a football kickoff showcase to build on the excitement of the season?”
